| A letter to Mr. Owen B. Jenkins (1862- )—a Philadelphia lawyer—on 5 June 1902, written on Browning Society of Philadelphia stationery. Mr. Jenkins was a member of the Pennsylvania state senate from 1915 to 1918.[1] Mrs. Coates was the president of the Browning Society of Philadelphia from 1895 to 1903, and again from 1907 to 1908. |
My dear Mr. Jenkins:—
I cannot allow so kind a note as yours to go without a word of written acknowledgement, will though I hope to see you at the Board meeting tomorrow.
I had very much hoped to attend the Committee meeting on Tuesday, but recently I have been very far from well, and the heat seemed to prostrate me utterly, so that I could not go to town. I was sorry, but wholly on my own account, for I have the most utter confidence in your judgement and ability, and I well know—having proved, your pains-taking devotion. You are very good to think of me in connection with the papers, and I am most appreciative of all your kind words, but I feel that it would not be possible for me to undertake anything more.
If I may suggest one or two names, I should be particularly glad if we might hear from Rev. Frederic A. Hinckley next winter, also Prof. Lamberton, Prof. Schilling, Prof. Birdsall (Swarthmore College) Prof. Edmonds, Miss Wharton, (Miss Repplier will not be in this country) Miss Mary Moss, of Chestnut Hill, and Miss Ethel Ramsey.
