Pierre du Calvet
(1735–1786)

Born in France to a Protestant family, Pierre du Calvet emigrated to Canada in New France just before the Conquest of it by the British Army in 1760. He settled there as a trader in Montreal and was granted the office of Justice of the Peace by Governor James Murray. Arrested and imprisoned by General Frederick Haldimand on suspicion of collaborating with the revolted Americans, he never ceased to claim his innocence, and brought his case over to England.
