Leaving alone at this point in time -- billinghurst (talk) 10:47, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gillian Fenwick attributes 9 articles to William Galloway, from Andrew Gray (1663-1656) to John Spottiswood (1666-1728). However, the ODNB attributes all these to William George, as well as the two articles – on Alexander Stopford Catcott (1692-1749) and John Taylor (1829-1893) – which Fenwick attributes to William George. Fenwick's attributions check out with the list of writers in volumes 23, 45, 48, 49, 53; so the ODNB is clearly wrong here. Charles Matthews (talk) 09:05, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
General point: {{DNB WG}} is clearly using the numbering of the 22-volume edition. We should switch over to the 63-volume numbering? Dsp13 having lent me the Fenwick book, I could eventually resolve all the issues on this disambiguation, with some effort. Charles Matthews (talk) 09:10, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am getting back (awfully slowly) and auditing these against real volumes. billinghurst (talk)
Assuming you have the list of the two dozen ambiguous author templates, let me have it, and I'll chip away at the volumes. Charles Matthews (talk) 20:33, 16 November 2009 (UTC).[reply]
Deal. With existing Author pages we need to edit the free text in the description where I have previously added the version numbers. billinghurst (talk) 23:48, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In vol. 53 (1898) Galloway is referred to as "the late"; not so in vol. 49 (1897). The main focus of the articles is Scottish history. Charles Matthews (talk) 08:33, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Checking Allibones and there is a Rev. William Brown Galloway, writing on religious matters, and religion and geology. Scottish census for 1890 shows plenty of William Galloways. Death index search shows 11 William Galloways dying in the years 1896-1898. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:24, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Times shows a death for William Galloway, Scottish antiquarian in their annual summation for 1897 deaths/obits, though no age, and I am unable to find it by general searches. ::A paid search at scotlandspeople.gov.uk shows
  • William Johnsto Galloway, age 77, Kelvin, Glasgow City
  • William Stewart Galloway, age 72, Renfrew
  • William Galloway, age 67, Whithorn, Wigtown

Got a notice, it is the last of the three.

Another obit[edit]

Mr. William Galloway, who has been employed for the last twelve or thirteen years in excavating the foundations of the old Cathedral at Whithorn, has died after a short illness. Old monuments of all kinds had a strong attraction for him, and his skills in deciphering characters on ancient stones was very great and exact. He was well versed in several languages, including Hebrew and Greek. Mr. Galloway was a poet of some note, as his poem "Twa Auld Whinstanes" testifies, and he was an author of several volumes, amongst which are "The Battle of Drofell" and "Augustine's City of God."

Article about his work[edit]

This article gives the context for Galloway's antiquarian work. It also gives a date of birth of 1832, which I'm adopting. Charles Matthews (talk) 08:27, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
