The Commonwealth of Britain Bill was introduced by Tony Benn, then a Labour MP in the House of Commons, first in 1991 but on numerous occasions since, such as Succession to the Crown Bill, H.L. Bill 11 (withdrawn); Succession to the Crown (No. 2) Bill, H.C. Bill 36 (dropped); Succession to the Crown and Retirement of the Sovereign Bill (negatived)

(all 2004-2005).

It proposed abolishing the British monarchy, making the United Kingdom (excluding Northern Ireland) a 'democratic, federal and secular commonwealth', in effect, a republic with a written constitution.

This Bill never became law, or even achieved a second reading.
