Academia musicale. (I.) Musical academy. A term long since applied by the Italians to certain musical meetings, held under a directing leader, for the purpose of amusement and practical improvement. The earliest Academia Musicale of which we have any account was instituted at Vincenzo about the year 1500, and called the Academia degli Filarmonici, (Academy of the Philharmonics, or lovers of harmony.)
