  — First English book edition; two volumes; title page says 1880 but it was actually published 10 December 1879; extensively revised by James, including redivision of the 12 serial instalments into 31 chapters.

• Confidence (Boston: Houghton, Osgood & Co., 1880)

  — First American book edition; published 7 February 1880; apparently James revised the English and American editions independently, deliberately tailoring the texts to the different national audiences. The most obvious marker for distinguishing the texts is the number of chapters, the American text having 30 chapters, the English text 31, the difference being the further division in the English text of the American chapter 10.
