O death, death, black death,
You have come for her, — have you?
Do not sever, for God's sake,
Our bond! — But death says:

"I understand your worry, —
I have severed many bonds;
Your bond is so strong
That I cannot sever it."

"I will only — this I can do —
Give it a different name,
Until now it has been called love,
— Henceforth it will be called sorrow."
