Clearly Beddard is following 19th century practice of applying Balaenoptera musculus to the Common Rorqual or Fin Whale subsequently redesignated B. physalus (Linnaeus, 1758), while B. musculus (Linnaeus, 1758) is properly the Blue Whale.
