Modern species designation:   Conocybe corneri
Sowerby's species designation:   Agaricus acetabulosus.
Sowerby's description:   On page 617
Later annotation on plate:   Ag. acetabulosus Sow / see Berk. in Cooke Illustrations / new subgenus / volval? base
Notes:   The genus name Acetabularia is illegitimate because it conflicts with a genus of algae. See the 1979 paper by Watling where he defines the new species Conocybe corneri and indicates that the mushroom depicted by Sowerby (and copied by Cooke) is the same one.[1]

A distinctive feature of Sowerby's illustration is the volva at the base of the stem. The equivalent names Locellina acetabulosa,[2] Acetabularia acetabulosa[3] and Pluteus semibulbosus[4] are attested to in a 1922 book "British Basidiomycetes" by Rea,[5] suggesting that this illustration is Pluteus inquilinus or Pluteus semibulbosus, but Watling's paper exhibiting Conocybes with volva makes this implausible.
