U. S. S. "CONSTELLATION" MOORED TO A WHARF: NEWPORT, R. I. Born into the American Navy in 1798, the same year which marked the advent of the more famous Constitution, the first USS Constellation, flagship of Commodore Thomas Truxton, carried the Stars and Stripes to victory in two of the most brilliant naval engagements in the history of our nation. The ship was replaced by another of the same name in 1853 and, like Old Ironsides, the Constellation is preserved as a shrine at which bluejackets and marines become imbued with the spirit which animated American seamen in the early days of the Republic.
