In H.M.S. Pinafore, Gilbert used several of his previous "Bab Ballads" as sources, taking elements from them and working them into dialogue or lyrics of the opera. S. J. Adair Fitz-Gerald writes that H.M.S. Pinafore and "several of the subsequent operas were simply and delightfully the amazingly extravagant Bab Ballads grown up."[1] In this Appendix, we provide the Bab Ballads identified by reliable sources as sources for H.M.S. Pinafore.
