Guidelines for proofreading Navigable Rivers[edit]

Pick any page which is red for first proofread: for a particular canal or railway, look at the index pages at the end (roman numbers) and use the page number to guide you to the appropriate page. To see the map associated with any waterway there is a link on the index page.

For first proofread it's only necessary to deal with the text, not the formatting. Some formatting is already there - you don't need to touch that, with one exception: there are a lot of (single) quotes which are italicized in the text. The text (which has been processed from Jim Shead's website) has run together the italicized '' with the single quote to give the wiki version of bold. To fix this, put a single space between the quote and the pair. Thus '' 'italicized quote' '' becomes 'italicized quote' instead of italicized quote.

When you've satisfied yourself that the text is correct click the yellow button next to "Page status" and save the text.

One of the benefits of using already processed text is that the many tables have already been formatted - one of least supported aspects of wikitext. In general you can correct the text without affecting the format, though it's worth removing the 'width="900"' directive at the beginning. He's also systematically changed the "s. d." for the charge rates. If you want to see what I've done, have a look at this page. But apart from removing the extra s & d you can leave that to the second stage.

For the validation, it's desirable to complete the other formatting tasks. This takes the page to the green validated status.

For help on the whole proofreading process look at Help:Proofread etc..
