Joy to the World
by William W. Phelps
Joy to the World! the Lord Will Come! was first published on the last page of the December 1832 issue of The Evening and Morning Star. The text below, however, is from the first Latter Day Saint Hymnal.

The differences are, for the most part, typographical. In the first printing, the verses are not numbered, the first word ("Joy") is in all capitals, and the first letter ("J") is a drop cap that takes up the first two lines. The hymn is headed "The second coming of the Savior" rather than "HYMN 15. C. M."

          HYMN 15. C. M.

 1 Joy to the world! the Lord will come!
     And earth receive her King;
   Let ev'ry heart prepare him room,
     And saints and angels sing.

 2 Rejoice! rejoice! when Jesus reigns!
     And saints their songs employ:
  While fields and floods, rocks, hills and
        plains,
     Repeat the sounding joy.

 3 No more will sins and sorrows grow,
     Nor thorns infest the ground;
   He'll come and make the blessings flow
     Far as the curse was found.

 4 Rejoice! rejoice! in the Most High,
     While Israel spread abroad,
   Like stars that glitter in the sky,
     And ever worship God.
