Lisa Raitt, and Jasmine MacDonnell
On June 8, 2009, CBC news online reported that a Nova Scotia court was hearing an argument to block the Halifax Chronicle-Herald from publishing a story about an audio recording involving Raitt. The injunction was denied. On the audio tape, made on January 30, 2009 by Jasmine MacDonnell, an aide who resigned on June 2, was a discussion between Raitt and the aide over the radio isotope shortage. The judge ruled that the public interest over-rode the issue of confidentiality. Raitt also made comments on the parliamentary skills of Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq, and Manitoba MP Joy Smith, who had introduced a private-members bill on human trafficking.— Excerpted from Lisa Raitt on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

RAITT: They’re terrified of the issues. You know what? Good. Because when we win on this, we get all the credit. I’m ready to roll the dice on this. This is an easy one. You know what solves this problem? Money. And if it’s just about money, we’ll figure it out. It’s not a moral issue.

MACDONNELL: No. The moral and ethical stuff around it are just clear.

RAITT: It’s really clear. Oh. Leona. I’m so disappointed.

MACDONNELL: Isn’t that interesting. They’re just so .... I wonder if it’s her staff trying to shield her from it or whether she is just terrified.

RAITT: I think her staff is trying to shield her. Oh, God. She’s such a capable woman, but it’s hard for her to come out of a co-operative government into this rough-and-tumble. She had a question in the House yesterday, or two days ago, that planked. I really hope she never gets anything hot.

MACDONNELL: But I know that what's interesting is the strategies surronding whatever they have, recalls and stuff, the term, you know, fairly petty things that she forgot, and they never put her out. You always hear Health officials talking. There is definitely a time and place where you want to keep it at the officials level, but you need to also demonstrate leadership as a minister.

RAITT: Yeah, you do. Wow. Well, that's why you and I had that fight, to allow me to put up that press release. Otherwise it helps.

MACDONNELL: And you look now at how often we had for self-esteem, you know how helpful that is to him?

RAITT: We had to set the tone. We had to control the agenda.

MACDONNELL: Yep. If that, this issue is hard enough to control because there is such an interest in so many different angles, and it's confusing to a lot of people.

RAITT: But it’s sexy. Radioactive leaks. Cancer.

MACDONNELL: Nuclear contamination.

RAITT: But it’s only about money. Speaking of career-limiting moves, I’m in shock that that MP, Joy Smith, brought forward private member’s legislation on human trafficking. She’s on Canada AM. And the reason being is that there’s no way any of us should be introducing anything around justice issues or finance issues right now. You just can’t touch those two things.
