Untitled comment[edit]

Hello,

Could this script be modified so that if the TOC is Chapter 2. Title Chapter 2, the previous and next parameters should be "next = Chapter 2. Title Chapter 2" and not "next = Chapter 2"? Thanks, Yann 21:56, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another issue: the template doesn't work if "override_author" is used. Yann 15:55, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If I understand correctly, this is not adding "| override_author=the United States Government". John Vandenberg (chat) 10:41, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Use of anon[edit]

Another quirk in the author = field is that when one use anon the regex is stopping at the end of the }} for the author field and therefore adding just {{anon. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:13, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, George Orwell III!

This script is accessing the wg** variables directly instead of using mw.config.get(), and it also uses the deprecated addOnloadHook. Could you make these updates? Helder.wiki 19:31, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Remove birthyear and deathyear for authors[edit]

[reply]

@Samwilson: No, actually, this script pulls the years from Wikipedia, not Wikidata. And at the point an author page is created we don't actually know the Wikidata item for the person, so we don't know whether it has the years or even whether there is a Wikidata item for this author.
In other words, I think if we're to tweak anything here, it should be to approach it more like Commons Creator pages. These (now) expect you to know the Wikidata item when you create the Creator template; and the Q-number is pretty much the only thing you specify there. Once created the template emits a warning if the specified Wikidata item doesn't point back to it, and offers to launch QuickStatements to fill the necessary links at Wikidata.
But that's a bigger change then just dropping the dob/dod prefill. --Xover (talk) 07:47, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Only pre-filled when known at WD and we have many pages where they are still local, so it is premature to remove these, they are still useful where completed. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:07, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Xover, @Billinghurst: I think the issue here is that sometimes we're pre-filling with dates from Wikipedia where those dates do actually already exist at Wikidata. If we're guessing the author's Wikipedia page to get the dates from there, we could also check at that point whether those dates are also in Wikidata (I think they often will be). I'm not suggesting we remove the birthyear and deathyear parameters, but just not pre-fill them. Sam Wilson 04:03, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If they are not pre-filled, then you don't know whether the page is existing at enWP, as that then replicates either no article, or a disambiguation page. I find that there is a benefit in the dates coming through and managing them myself. Otherwise people can turn off the gadget, and just use the script thingy on the page. From a maintenance point of view, I much prefer to have indications of years of life rather than nothing. If date exists, despite comments, after a series of saves, then it is simply there until maintained, and we don't have too many, as I have maintained them. — billinghurst sDrewth 04:21, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Samwilson, @Billinghurst: I've disabled the edit request to clear out the maintenance queue. It seems clear this is an issue that needs more discussion than what's reasonable for a simple edit request. I suggest you open a discussion on the Scriptorium to determine how we want this gadget to behave. Personally I think we should have something interactive that helps you either tie the author page to an existing Wikidata item, or to properly create one if it is missing. Creating author pages here and at WD is a lot more of a tedious manual process than it needs to be. --Xover (talk) 08:44, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Xover, @Billinghurst: Yes, sounds sensible. I'll have more of a think about it all. Thanks. Sam Wilson 09:17, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Xover: if you want to do an easy creation at WD from here, then utilise the WEF framework gadget, and focus on the person line. With regard to finding, I still find the search function most useful. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:40, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
