"RIP VAN WINKLE."
49

They heard above the ocean swell,
Ring faint but clear a wedding bell.
And where the boat put off they found
A tiny shoe upon the ground.

As scent of faded rose-leaves dead
With dreams of summer fills the head,
As the faint murmurs in a shell
Of green foam-crested surges tell,
So this forgotten little shoe
Told me the tale I've told to you.

"Rip van Winkle."
