He had previ- ously been advanced to the primacy of Canterbury by pope Boniface in the stead of Thomas Arundel, who was banished for treason ! ; but king Henry IV hav- ing restored Arundel to the see of Canterbury, de- clared Roger Walden an intruder and usurper. After five years spent in private life, he accepted, with king Henry's permission, the bishopric of London. He made his profession to the archbishop 29th June, and was installed the next day.
