were surrendered into the King's hands, by deed dated as above, John Higden being then dean' 1 ' 1 ; and the King (changing the name from Cardinal college to King Henry the Eighth's college) on 27th Sept. 153a rested all hack again into the hands of trustees 70 . In the year 1 -42 the same King erected a new bi- shop's see at Osney" 1 ; but soon after, not liking that situation, removed it to Oxford, and changed the name once more, from King Henry the Eighth's col- lege, to Christ Church. So that though John Higden? 2 , John Oliver? 3 , and John London 7 ' are reckoned deans here, yet

Richard Cox, S.T.P., made dean of the newly-erected see at Osncy 8th Jan. [5434, and translated hither in 1545; became the first dean of Christ Church 4th Nov. He was deprived of this deanery in 1553.

Richard Marshall or Martiall, S.T.P., j>r> h ndary of St. Paul's, Lorn/on, (htd Winchester, was put in by queen Mary in 15.53; and (upon queen Elizabeth's ac- cession to the crown) he resigned it in May 1559'

George Carew, S.T.P., was made dean here 9th May 1559; and he resigned it in 1561, on being made dean of Windsor.

Thomas Sampson, S.T.P., formerly ihan <>f Chichester, was installed in Michaelmas term 1561. He was de- prived in 1564, for puritanism, by archbishop Parker. Died 9th April 1589, setat. 72, and was buried in the chapel of AVigstorfs hospital in Leicester, of which he was master.

Thomas Godwin, S.T.P., prebendary of Lincoln, suc- ceeded in June 1565; he was removed to the dean-
