The officers, concealing the consternation into which such an astoundinix revelation had thrown them, followed the directions of the Resident, and quietly withdrawing from the gay throng, pro- ceeded Avith their commander in great rapidity to the fort, the gates of which were noiselessly closed as soon as they were within the walls.

Every Swiss sentinel was disarmed and taken prisoner by Dutch and native soldiers. The be- wildered conspirators were seized in their barracks, and forced to lay down their arms.
