This monarcli's reign, however, was a very short one. ImpKcated in certain intrigues which were sup- posed to be detrimental to the interests of the Dutch, he was, by their orders, seized and exiled to Amboyna, where he died. He was succeeded by a third brother the present emperor having again refused the seat of honour who conducted himself till his death, which happened in 1859, to the entire satisfaction of all parties. Had the " Cron-Prins," his nephew, been old enough to reign when the monarch died, the present Susu- hunan would, for the third time, have declined to take the reins of government into his hands. As it was, he had no alternative, and I believe he has had no reason to regret his exalted position, for his reign has been one of uninterrupted peace.
The King of Holland has conferred upon him several honours, one so recently as the year 1862, when he received the honorary title of Major- General in the Dutch Indian army. His native
