Lord Gladstone wrote:—

"I much regret that my wife and I leave London to-morrow and cannot accept your courteous invitation to meet Mr. and Mrs. M. K. Gandhi and Mr. Kellenbach on Saturday. I much regret this, for the occasion will be a happy one as marking the settlement of outstanding British Indian grievances in South Africa in which your guests have taken so leading and so effective a part.
