Steel, Mrs. Flora Annie; well known writer and Novelist; d. of late George Webster; b. at Harrow, but brought up in Forfarshire; an omniverous reader; adopted Art as her profession at the suggestion of Sir Noel Paton; m. Mr. Steel, a Bengal Civilian, and came out to India, 1867; deeply interested in the Native Indian Life; began to urge educational reforms on the attention of the Government of India; worked earnestly in the cause of education and was thanked by Government on no fewer than six different occasions for her labours in the field of education; became Inspectress of Government and Aided Schools in the Punjab; for some years a Member of the Educational Committee; did much in conjunction with Mr. Lockwood Kipling to foster Indian Arts and Crafts, Publications: “Wide-
