Franklin rose with a speech in his hand, which he had reduced to writing for his own conveniency, .and which Mr. Wilson read in the words following.? Mr. President I confess that there are several parts of this constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them: For having lived long, I have experi- a Franklin seems to have sent copies of this speech in his own handwriting to several of his friends, and one of these soon found its way into print (see Carey's almerica? M?eum, II, pp. ?;58-559). After examining several of these copies, it seems probable that Madison's copy represents the speech as it was read. The others all embody subsequent modifications.
