XXIV.- An Actfbr Ute Reliq ry':/ze United States Troops who were Sugferers by March 27, 1854. the recent Dusaster to the Steamship San Euneisco. ——-——— Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That there shall be paid, under Payment to the direction of the President, to each of the officers, nomcommissioned °°"§’·“‘ g";s°§* oflicers, musicians, and privates, who, on the twenty-iirst day of Decern- (fzI;.,,;§;c;_ ° m ber, eighteen hundred and fifty-three, embarked at New York, under orders for California, on the steamship San Francisco, and who was on board that vessel on the occasion of her recent disaster at sea, and to Lieutenant Francis Key Murray, and any other officer or seaman of the United States’ navy, who was on board the said steamship, under orders, a sum equal in amount to his pay and allowances for eight months. Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That if any such officer, n0n-com- I¤<>¤·‘¥° <>Yd*=¤*l¤ missioned ofncer, musician, or private, shall have died before receiving :Q€:;‘?§0"§K` such payment, from any cause consequent upon said disaster, his widow, made. if one survive him, and if not, then his minor children, if any there be, shall be paid a sum equal in amount to six months’ pay, and allowances of the deceased. And that the widows and minor children of those officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates, who perished by this disaster, or who died from disease in consequence thereof, shall be allowed pensions in the same manner in all respects as if the said officers, noncommissioned officers, and privates had been killed in battle. Approved, March 27, 1854. CHAP. XXV. -An Act for the Relief of Settlers on Lands reserved for Railroad Pmposes. March 27, 1854. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United __ _ States of America in Uongress assembled, That every settler on public ri £{§°g*1P*·;2gds lands which have been or may be withdrawn from market in consequence mgcwed O,,` ,,0 of proposed railroads, and who had settled thereon prior to such with- count of propos drawal, shall be entitled to preemption at the ordinary minimum to the °d ““1"°"d“‘ lands settled on and cultivated by them: Provided, They shall prove up their rights according to such rules and regulations as may be prescribed by the Secretary of the Interior, and pay for the same before the day that may be fixed by the President’s proclamation for the restoration of said lands to market. APPROVED, March 27, 1854. CHAP. XXVI.-An Act to amend an Act, entitled “An Act to Divide the Stale of March 27, 1854. Arkansas into Two Judicial Districts," approved March the third, eighteen hundred and jijiy-one. ’ ' Bc it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of Ame·rica in Congress assembled, That upon conviction of offenders Prisoners, where in the Western Judicial District of the State of Arkansas, for offences to S°¤*°¤°°d *°· which, punishment by confinement in the penitentiary is annexed, it shall be lawful for the court before whom convictions have or may be had, to sentence convicts to undergo imprisonment in the Penitentiary House of the State situated in the Eastern Judicial District, in the same manner as though the Penitentiary House was situated in the Western Judicial Limits of Wcst~ District of the State of Arkansas; and the counties of Sevier and em Di“’*°*· Sebastian in the said State, are hereby added to, and made a part of the said Western Judicial District. Sec. 2.
