Joint Resolution To designate the period commencing February 9, 1987, and ending February 15, 1987, as "National Burn Awareness Week".

Whereas the burn problem in the United States is the worst of any industrialized nation in the world; Whereas burn injuries are one of the leading causes of accidental death in the United States; Whereas every year approximately two million people are victims of burn injury in the United States; Whereas of these injuries, seventy thousand are hospitalized and account for nine million disability days annually; Whereas approximately twelve thousand people die from burn injuries; Whereas deaths resulting from burn injuries increased in 1985; Whereas the rehabilitative and psychological impact of burns are devastating; Whereas children, the elderly, and the disabled are most likely to suffer serious burns; Whereas it is estimated that approximately 75 percent of all burns could be prevented by proper education of children and adults; and Whereas there is a need for an effective national program that deals with all aspects of burn prevention: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the period commencing February 9, 1987, and ending Februaryr 15, 1987, is designated as "National Bum Awareness Week" and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States and all Federal, State, and local government officials to observe such week with appropriate programs and activities.
