W e are especially thankful for the mothers who support their sons and daughters serving in our Armed Forces and for the mothers who bring honor to the uni- form of the U nited S tates by defending our freedom at home and abroad. E very child blessed with a mother’s love has been given one of life’s great gifts. On this Mother’s D ay, we recognize the extraordinary con- tributions America’s mothers make to their children, their families, and our country. To honor mothers, the C ongress, by a j oint resolution approved May 8 , 19 1 4 , as amended (3 8 Stat. 7 7 0) , has designated the second Sunday in May each year as ‘‘Mother’s Day’’ and has re q uested the President to call for its appropriate observance.
