For procuring, producing, preserving and handling ordnance ma- Material and terial; for the armament of ships; for fuel, tools, material, and labor ¤¤PP1i¤¤· to be used in the general work of the Ordnance Department; for furniture at magazines, at the ordnance dock, New York, and at the naval ordnance battery and proving-ground, one hundred and nine thousand three hundred dollars. One or more rifiled cannon of each type constructed at the cost of the T¤¤t§ Of fiiivd United States for the Navy shall be publicly subjected to the proper °"““°“· test for endurance including such rapid firing as a like gun would be subjected to in battle. This test shall be under the direction and to the satisfaction of the Secretary of the Navy, and if such guns do not prove satisfactory, the type they represent shall not be put in use in the naval service. For necessary repairs to ordnance buildings, magazines, gun-parks, R¤1>¤i¤‘¤· boats, lighters, wharves, machinery, and other objects of the like character, fiiteen thousand dollars. For miscellaneousitems, namely : Freight to foreign and home stations, Contingent cxadvertising and auctioneer’s fees, cartage and express charges, repairs P°“““· to tire-engines, gas and water pipes, gas and water tax at magazines, toll, ferriage, foreign postage, and telegrams to and from the Bureau, four thousand dollars. For the civil establishment at navy-yards and stations, including Civil ¤¤i¤l>ii¤h· writers, clerks, foreman, draughtsmen, assistant draughtsman, and a “‘°“’· chemist, twenty-three thousand two hundred and four dollars; and no other fund appropriated by this act shall be used in payment for such services. For the torpedo corps, namely : For labor; material; freight and ex- T°¥P°<i° °°¥P°· press charges; general care of and repairs to grounds, buildings, wharves ; boats; instruction; instruments, tools, turniture, experiments, and general torpedo outiits, fifty thousand dollars. For new ferry-launch, in place of the one now in use, which shall be sold, and building fuse-room and coal-shed, eight thousand five hundred dollars. For equipment of vessels: For coal for steamers’ and ships’ use, in- Eaiiivmwi °f cluding expenses of transportation, storage, and handling; hemp, wire, "°”°l’· hides, and other materials for the manufacture of rope and cordage; iron for the manufacture of anchors, cables, galleys, and chains; canvas for the manufacture of sails, awnings, bags, and hammocks; heating apparatus for receiving-ships; and for the purchase of all other articles of equipment at home and abroad, and for the payment of labor in equipping vessels and manufacture of equipment articles in the several navy-yards, seven hundred and eighty-two thousand two hundred dollars. For expenses of recruiting for the naval service, rent of rendezvous R¤¢=r¤ii=i¤z- and expense of maintaining the same, advertising for men and boys, and all other expenses attending the recruiting for the naval service, and for the transportation of enlisted men and boys at home and abroad, twenty-five thousand dollars.
