That all piers shall be bu' t parallel with the current of r1ei·¤,em. the river at that stage of water which is most important for naviga- ` tion, and the bridge itself shall be built as nearly as maiy be at right ` angles thereto; and that riprapping or other protection or imperfect wg°*¤<=*¤d *·*·¤'~ foundations which will lessen the required water-way shall not be ` rmitted; and also that piers which will produce cross-currents or bgrs dangerous to navigation shall not be constructed; and if, after construction any piers or accessory works are found to produce the ,gQg}·]'g°°*§bg*;¤bP:,é¤3_*· above-mentioned effects, or if any riprapping or other protection prohibited by this section is found to exist, the nuisance shall be abated or corrected under the direction of the Secretary of War, or at the expense of the company or personsowning, controlling, or operating said bridge. ’ Sec. 5. That the approaches to said bridge shall be so designed *¤P*'°•°h°¤· and constructed as not to interfere with the free discharge of said ‘ river in seasons of flood; and any encroachment on the high-water mgwnamvnw on eross·section by piers, solid embankments, or otherwise w ’ch will nm., "°"'°°°` result in undul accelerating the high—water current at the site of the bridge not be allowed. Sec. 6. at an co ration, com any, or persons owning, con- _Ao¢ess<> works, trolling, or o ratihg the bridge built under the authority of this “°“°°““;&““°“· act shall builllgand maintain at all times, as accessory works to such bridge, such booms, piers, dikes, guard fences, and similar devices ‘ as may be necessary to insure at a l times a permanent channel for a sudicient distance above and below the bridge site, and for the · ‘ 'din of rafts, steam-boats, and other water-craft safely under or ghlrlougli said bridge; and if at any time after the construction of the bridge and its accessory works the approaches to draw-opening , channel-spans, or raft-passages in said ridge are found to be danerous or difficult of access by any important class of river: traffic, gba Secretary of War may, u on the recommendation of the Chief of Engineers, United States llrmy, order the corporation, company, or rsons owning, controlling, or operating said ridge to construct, ungelr his directions, and to maintain such add1tiona sheer-booms, édditlgu sheen dikes, and other devices as will obviate the diiiiculty mentioned, “‘“·° . which additional sheer-booms, dikes, and other devices shall be built and maintained at their own expense by said company or persons; and that said company or persons shall maintain, at their own_ex— pense, from sunset to_ sunrise throughout the season of navigation, such lights and other signals on said _ bridge as_ may be required by ¤si¤¤¤·¤¤=· the Light-House Board for the security of navigation. _ Sec. 7.
