Whoever, being, or about to be, a witness upon a trial, brQ,Q*¤°¤ ¤°°°P°i¤¤ hearing, or other proceeding, before any court or any officer author- ` ized by the laws of the United States to hear evidence or take testimony, shall receive, or agree or offer to receive, a bribe, upon any agreement or understanding that his testimony shall be iniiuenced t ereby, or that he will absent himself from the trial, hearing, or other proceeding, or because of such testimony, or such absence, P¤¤i¤¤¤¤¤*!°¤· shall be fined not more than two thousand dollars, or imprisoned not more than two years, or both. - Sec. 135. Whoever corruptly, or by threats or force, or by any mAQ9w*{*,l,j*§__¤;¢!gi¤¤¤· threatening letter or communication, shall endeavor to influence, ouim. Whenever any marshal, de uty marshal, ministerial oiii- ,,,‘§B§,§QQ‘f" *"“"’“°‘ cer, or other person has in his custodgy any prisoner by virtue of ,0% S-, =¤·=· WM r- process issued under the laws of the ’nited States by anly court, ' judge, or commissioner, and such marshal, dgputy marsha , mmrsterial officer, or other person voluntarily su ers such prisoner to escape, he shall be fined not more than two thousand dollars, or imprisoned not more than two years, or both. _ _ Sec. 139. The receding section shall be construed to apply not only ,.,$},’,’{§{°“”‘°“ °f ’“* to cases in which the prisoner who escaped was charged or found guilty of an offense against the laws of the United States, and to cases in which the prisoner may be in custody charged with offenses against any foreign government with which the United States have treaties of extradition, but also to cases in which the prisoner may be held in custody for removal to or from the Philippine Islands as provided by law.
