FEDERAL FARM LOAN BUREA U SALARIES AND EXPENSES For s ix mem bers o f the board, at $1 0,000 e ach ; personal services in the District of Columbia and in the field ; traveling expenses of the members of the board and its officers and employees ; contingent and miscellaneous expenses, including law books, books of reference, periodicals, newspapers, and maps ; contract stenographic reporting services, and expert services for the preparation of amortization tables ; examination of national farm loan associations ; and for the exp enses of registrar s' office s, includ ing rent and misce llaneous items ; in all, $940,000, payable from assessments upon Federal and joint- stock land banks and Federal intermediate credit banks ; of which not more than $375,000 may be used for personal services in the District of Columbia . Whenever, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1930 the Farm Lo an Bo ard shall find that the expe nses of t ravel can be re duce d thereby, it may, in lieu of actual operating expenses, under such regulations as it may prescribe, authorize the payment of not to exceed 3 cents per mile for motor cycle or 7 cents per mile for an automobile, used for necessary travel on official business : Provided, That, at the request of the Federal Farm Loan Board, whenever in its opinion the expense will be reduced thereby, the work in Wash- ing ton in cident to th e veri ficati on for destru ction of pai d and can- celed intermediate credit bank debentures, farm loan bonds and coupons thereof, may, with the approval of the Secretary of the Treasury, be performed by the office of the Register of the Treasury, an d the approp riatio n from which salar ies of employ ees in the o ffice of the Register of the Treasury are paid may be reimbursed from this appropriation for the actual expense of such work .
