CONTINGENT EXP ENS ES, DEPARTMENT OF LABOR For contingent and miscellaneous expenses of the offices and bureaus of the department, for which appropriations for contingent and miscellaneous expenses are not specifically made, including the purchase of stationery, furniture and repairs to the same, carpets, matting, oilcloth, file cases, towels, ice, brooms, soap, sponges, laundry, street-car fares not exceeding $200 ; lighting and heating ; purchase, exchange, maintenance, and repair of motor cycles and motor trucks ; purchase, exchange, maintenance, and repair of a motor-propelled passenger-carrying vehicle, to be used only for official purposes ; freight and express charges, newspapers not exceed- ing $400, for which payment may be made in advance ; newspaper clippings not to exceed $1,800, postage to foreign countries, tele- graph and telephone service, typewriters, adding machines, and other labor-saving devices ; purchase of law books, books of refer- ence, and periodicals not exceeding $3,250 ; in all, $42,000 ; and in addition thereto such sum as may be necessary, not in excess of $13,500, to facilitate the purchase, through the central purchasing office as provided in the Act approved June 17, 1910 (U.
