SALARIES AND GENERAL EXPENSES For all ne cessar y expe nses, for ch emical appara tus, c hemica ls and supplies, repairs to apparatus, gas, electric current, official traveling expenses, telegraph and telephone service, express and freight charges, for the employment of such assistants, clerks, and other persons as the Secre tary o f Agri cultur e may consid er nece ssary for th e purp oses named, in the city of Washington and elsewhere, in conducting investigations ; collecting, reporting, and illustrating the results of such investigations ; and for rent outside of the District of Columbia for carrying out the investigations and work herein authorized as follows For necessary expenses for general administrative purposes, includ- ing the salary of chief of administration and other personal services in the District of Columbia, $98,000 . For collaboration with other departments of the Government desiring chemical investigations and whose heads request the Secre- tary of Agriculture for such assistance, and for other miscellaneous wor k, $15 ,725 . For e nablin g the Secret ary of Agric ulture to car ry int o effe ct the provisions of the Act of June 30, 1906, entitled "An Act for prevent- ing the m anufac ture, sale, or tra nsport ation o f adul terate d, or mis- branded, or poisonous, or deleterious foods, drugs, medicines, and liquors, and for regulating traffic therein, and for other purposes " ; to cooperate with ass ociations and scie ntific so cieties i n the rev ision of the Unit ed St ates Pharm acop ceia and d evel opmen t of metho ds o f analysis, and for investigating the character of the chemical and physical tests which are applied to American food products in foreign cou ntries , and for in specti ng the same before shipme nt whe n desi red by the shippers or owners of these products intended for countries where chemical and physical tests are required before the said prod- ucts are allowed to be sold therein, $938,000 : Provided, That not more than $4,280 shall be used for travel outside of the United States . For en abling the S ecreta ry of Agricu lture t o carr y into effec t the provisions of the Act approved March 2, 1897, entitled "An Act to prevent the importation of impure and unwholesome tea," as amended, including payment of compensation and expenses of the members of the board appointed under section 2 of the Act and all other necessary officers and employees, $41,055 . For enabling the Secretary of Agriculture to carry into effect the provisions of the Naval Stores Act of March 3, 1923, $37,825 . For enabling the Secretary of Agriculture to carry into effect the provisions of the Act of April 26, 1910, entitled "An Act for prevent- ing the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated or mis- branded Paris greens, lead arsenates, other insecticides, and also fungi cides, an d for reg ulating t raffic th erein, a nd for ot her purpo ses," $215 ,000 . For enabling the Secretary of Agriculture to carry into effect the provisions of an Act approved February 15, 1927, entitled "An Act to regulate the importation of milk and cream into the United States for the purpose of promoting the dairy industry of the United States and protecting the public health," $50,000 .
