PREVEN TION OF CONTAGI OUS DISEASES For contingent expenses incident to the enforcement of the pro- visions of an Act to prevent the spread of contagious diseases in the District of Columbia, approved March 3, 1897 (29 Stat ., pp . 635-6.41), and an Act fo r the preven tion o f scar let fev er, di phther ia, me asles, whooping cough, chicken pox, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, and typhoid fever in the District of Columbia, approved February 9, 1907 (34 Stat ., pp . 889-890), and an Act to provide for registra- tion of a ll cases of tuberc ulosis in the Dist rict of C olumbia, for free examination of sputum in suspected cases, and for preventing the spread of tuberculosis in said District of Columbia, approved May 13, 1908 (35 Stat ., pp . 126-127), under the direction of the health officer of sa id Dis trict, manuf acture of ser ums, i ncludi ng the ir use in indi gent c ases, and fo r the preven tion of infan tile p aralys is and other comm unica ble disea ses, and of an Act for t he p reven tion of venereal diseases in the District of Columbia, and for other purposes, approved February 26, 1925 (43 Stat ., pp . 1001-1003), and for main- tenance o f disinfe cting ser vice, inc luding sa laries or compensa tion for personal services, when ordered in writing by the commissioners and necessary for the enforcement and execution of said Acts, and for the prevention of such other communicable diseases as hereinbefore provided, and purchase of reference books and medical journals, $38,0 00 : Provided, That any bacteriologist employed under this appropriation may be assigned by the health officer to the bac- terio logic al ex amin ation of m ilk and o ther dairy pro ducts and of the water supplies of dairy farms, and to such other sanitary works as in the judgment of the health officer will promote the public health, whether such examinations be or be not directly related to contagious diseases . For isolating wards for minor contagious diseases at Garfield Memorial and Providence Hospitals, maintenance, $17,000 and $10,000, respectively, or so much thereof as in the opinion of the commissioners may be necessary ; in, all, $27,000 . For the maintenance of a dispensary or dispensaries for the treat- ment of indigent persons suffering from tuberculosis and of indigent persons suffering from venereal diseases, including payment for personal services, rent, supplies, and contingent expenses, $29,000 : Prov ided , That t he com missio ners m ay acc ept su ch volu nteer servic es as they deem expedient in connection with the establishment and maintenance of the dispensaries herein authorized : Provided fur- titer, That this shall not be construed to authorize the expenditure 1399 Clinic.
