Disbursement.

personnel shall be made to the government of the District of Columbia, and any sums so reimbursed shall be credited to the appropriation or appropriations from which such salaries and expenses are payable and shall be available for all the purposes thereof: Provided, That any person detailed under the authority of this paragraph or under similar authority in the Legislative Branch Appropriation Act, 1942, and the Second Deficiency Appropriation Act, 1940, from the Metropolitan Police of the District of Columbia shall be deemed a member of such Metropolitan Police during the period or periods of any such detail for all purposes of rank, pay, allowances, privileges, and benefits to the same extent as though such detail had not been made, and at the termination thereof any such person who was a member of such police on July 1, 1940, shall have a status with respect to rank, pay, allowances, privileges, and benefits which is not less than the status of such person in such police at the end of such detail: Provided further, That the Commissioners of the District of Columbia are directed to pay the lieutenants detailed under the authority of this paragraph the same salary as that paid in fiscal year 1955 plus $625 each and such increases in basic compensation as may be subsequently provided by law so long as these positions are held by tl e present incumbents. x h e foregoing auiouuts Under "Capitol Police" shall be disbursed by the Clerk of the House. OFFICE OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL For salaries and expenses of maintenance of the Office of the Legislative Counsel, as authorized by law, including increased and additional compensation as provided by law, $290,000, of which $153,000 shall be disbursed by the Secretary of the Senate and $137,000 shall be disbursed by the Clerk of the House: Provided, That effective August 1, 1955, the gross annual compensation of the Legislative Counsel of the Senate shall be $15,500 per annum. JOINT COMMITTEE ON REDUCTION OF N O N E S S E N T I A L EXPENDITURES

For an amount to enable the Joint Committee on Reduction of Nonessential Federal Expenditures to carry out the duties imposed upon it by section 601 of the Revenue Act of 1941 (55 Stat. 726), to remain available during the existence of the committee, $22,500, to be disbursed by the Secretary of the Senate.

EDUCATION OF SENATE AND HOUSE PAGES 2°us*c**88i^^'

For education of congressional pages and pages of the Supreme Court, pursuant to section 243 of the Legislative Reorganization Act, ^^^^'. $47,280, which amount shall be advanced and credited to the applicable appropriation of the District of Columbia, and the Board of Education of the District of Columbia is hereby authorized to employ such personnel for the education of pages as may be required and to pay compensation for such services in accordance with such rates of compensation as the Board of Education may prescribe.
