One of the major howlers of this translation of the Principia is the following:

'....Mr. Machin, Astron., Prof. Gresh.. and Dr. Henry Pemberton....'.

It should read:

'....J. Machin, Gresh.[am] Prof.[essor of] Astron.[omy], and Dr. Henry Pemberton....',

referring to the 2 scholars who submitted solutions: John (not 'Mr.') Machin (Gresham Professor of Astronomy), and Dr. Henry Pemberton.

This glaring error was one of the main reasons I. Bernard Cohen gave for deciding to produce his new translation: Principia, A New Translation, by I. Bernard Cohen and Anne Whitman – University of California Press, 1999.

Given the existence of Cohen and Whitman's superb translation, it seems bizarre that Wikisource should be transcribing such an inferior one at all.

We're confined to only curate works whose copyright has expired. That, and we have a universal goal--transcribe everything, even the dreck. Prosody (talk) 00:23, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
