[edit] MC
May I have your attention, please. Please be upstanding for the arrival of the Governor of Queensland, her Excellency, Miss Quentin Bryce, AC.
Please be seated.
Your Excellency, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. It is my honor to be your MC today on the occasion of this commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Peace. This afternoon, we will first hear from her Excellency, our Governor, Miss Bryce. She’s only the second woman since 1859 to become Governor of Queensland and one of the first Queensland women to be admitted to the bar of our state. After teaching in the faculty of law at the University of Queensland, she was appointed the first director of the Queensland Women’s Information Service in the office of the Status of Women and later became the Queensland Director of Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.
She then moved to Sydney to take up her role as Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner. It was during this time as a member of Australia’s delegation to the UN Commission on Human Rights that she participated in the historic conventions on the elimination of discrimination against women and on the rights of the child. Later, she became the founding member and was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the National Child Care Accreditation Counsel. Before returning to Brisbane to commence her term as Governor of Queensland in 2003, her Excellency served for six years as principal and Chief Executive Officer of the Women’s College within the University of Sydney, New South Wales. She is a Companion of the Order of Australia.
Please welcome her Excellency, Miss Quentin Bryce.
