| 1-4 | hai bhee sach naanak hosee bhee sach. (1) | True Now and Nanak will be Forever True. (1) |
| 1-5 | sochai soch na hova-ee jay sochee lakh vaar. | By thinking, He cannot be comprehended, even by thinking hundreds of thousands of times. |
| 1-6 | chupai chup na hova-ee jay laa-ay rahaa liv taar. | By remaining silent, inner peace cannot be obtained, even by remaining deeply absorbed. |
| 1-7 | bhukhi-aa bhukh na utree jay bannaa puree-aa bhaar. | The hunger of the hungry is not satisfied, even by piling up loads of worldly goods. |
| 1-8 | sahas si-aanpaa lakh hohi ta ik na chalai naal. | Hundreds of thousands of clever tricks, but not even one will not go with you in the end. |
| 1-9 | kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal. | How can you become truthful? And how can the veil of illusion be torn away? |
| 1-10 | hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal. (1) | Obey the Hukam of His Command, Nanak, and walk the Way of His Will. (1) |
| 1-11 | hukmee hovan aakaar hukam na kahi-aa jaa-ee. | By His Command, bodies are created; His Command cannot be described. |
| 1-12 | hukmee hovan jee-a hukam milai vadi-aa-ee. | By His Command, life appears; by His Command glory is obtained. |
| 1-13 | hukmee utam neech hukam likh dukh sukh paa-ee-ah. | By His Command, greatness and misery appear; by His Command, is written pain and pleasure. |
| 1-14 | iknaa hukmee bakhsees ik hukmee sadaa bhavaa-ee-ah. | No one without His Command is blessed; Others, by His Command wander aimlessly forever. |
| 1-15 | hukmai andar sabh ko baahar hukam na ko-ay. | Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command. |
| 1-16 | naanak hukmai jay bujhai ta ha-umai kahai na ko-ay. (2) | O Nanak, one who understands His Command, does not speak in ego. (2) |

| 1-20 | gaavai ko vidi-aa vikham veechaar. | Some sing of His knowledge, philosophical and thought-process. |
| 1-21 | gaavai ko saaj karay tan khayh. | Some sing about how He fashions the body, and then reduces it to dust. |
| 1-22 | gaavai ko jee-a lai fir dayh. | Some sing about how He takes life away, and then again restores it. |
| 1-23 | gaavai ko jaapai disai door. | Some sing about how He seems so very far away. |
