Sometimes
by José Asunción Silva
Translated from the Spanish by Zach Powell.

Sometimes, when in high tranquil night,
Over the keys your white hand flies,
Like a butterfly over a lily
And rich notes grab onto the keyboard,
Crossing the space of dark shadow
Moonbeams filter through the window,
That trace long lights over the rug,
And on the wings of the notes to other places,
Fly my thoughts, crossing the seas,
And in a gothic castle where in the stones
Mossy with the centuries, ivy grows,
There with both elbows in your window
We watch the day die in the shadows
And the shady night rise up from the valleys
And I am your page, my Castillian,
And when in the spaces the night closes,
The fire of your room gilds the furniture,
And we look at each other and smile
While the wind outside sighs and cries!

.....................................................

How you hold out your wings, vain dreams,
When over the keys her hands fly!
