[edit] Title and date
In all the sources I have looked at, the title is "Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography," that is the apostrophe comes after the "s" rather than before it, and "æ" is used instead of "e". archive.org also says "Appleton's", but when I checked the source said "Appletons'". There also seem to be a motley bunch of dates out there. I have a Volume I facsimile with date 1891, and my Volume VI is dated 1889. archive.org says its Volume I (link above) has a stated date of 1898 although it also gives the date 1900 on the same page.
