Lamartine reverently epitomizes the great mystery in two lines of his "Episodes of Insect Life:"
" My dog ! the difference between thee and me
Knows only our Creator."

When proofreading this document, I have found many style changes I would like to make. I think we are best imitating the style of the published paper version as much as possible, rather than adding colors (even if attractive) to quotes. So for one change, I changed the way the initial quotes appear. For a second change, I added the ✲ symbol for use as a link to the source — in many cases the quote was several lines long, and it is awkward to link such a long portion of text. I only changed the first 3 quotes, since I wanted to get consensus here before I made too many widespread changes. If this seems like the way to go, I'll change the rest of the document to use this style. —Quadell (talk / swapmeet) 20:38, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm, not sure I like the new way of quoting - the general "feel" of WMF projects is that you can click terms to be taken to the page about them - not that you can read footnotes telling you what to click. Also, the header now says that number footnotes were used to identify the quotes in the physical book - which judging from the actual book, they were not. The author didn't seem to "attribute" many of the quotes, instead assuming a well-read reader would simply recognise them - or marvel at the gem. By using wikilinks, we avoid "cluttering" the work, so a reader can still copy/paste it en-masse, without having stray characters introduced. - I think we may have to respectfully disagree on this. You're right that your version is better for cutting-and-pasting, but I think my way has the advantage that it avoids an entire line (or an entire page, for some of the poems) being one extended link. I'm willing to defer to you in this work, since you imported it. . . but do you think we should take this to the Scriptorium for more eyes?
