Talk:Ratifications of the Constitution of the United States/New York
Ernie G Question Where do the italics come from? Are all italics or emphasis in the original?
In Particular That the people have a right to keep and bear arms; that a well-regulated militia, including the body of the people capable of bearing arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defence of a free state.
The words --> capable of bearing arms
- The italics are in Jonathan Eliot's edition which this webpage is based on, you can view that particular page here. I wasn't able to find an image of the original manuscript online, however I did find a contemporary publication here which does exhibit those italics. Prosody (talk) 22:25, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
- Here's the LoC American Memory page for that document. Prosody (talk) 22:28, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
