The father of John Tanswell was actually Stephen Cocke Tanswell who married Ann Nicholas in 1787 not Stephen Cocke who married Ann Tanswell. In fact there is no verified source of a Stephen Cocke marrying Ann Tanswell.

The following document records that Stephen Cocke Tanswell, son of William Taswell and Lydia Barrell married Ann Nicholas and that when Stephen died in 1848 his only surviving son was John Tanswell born 1800

Stephen Cocke Tanswell was born in Bristol, son of William Tanswell and Lydia Barrell. William's mother was a Miss Cocke.

The confusion probably arises because the copy of his Will which is in the name of Stephen Tanswell has a note in the margin which says "Stephen Cock otherwise Stephen Tanswell" I do not know why this should be, but it is incorrect. In the record of Probate, he is referred to as Stephen Cock Tanswell, also on the record of his death in 1848. [Unsigned]

Thanks, I have put a note on the page referencing the ODNB. Charles Matthews (talk) 07:23, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
