I've just had a quick scan over this, and I know that Carroll was a great mathematician and that this is obviously satire/joke etc, but what the hell is he on about?!

Don't even think about it! Though according to the Lewis Carrol Web Site, [1] the parody was in relation to

"Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893)Master of Balliol. Appointed to the Regius Professorship of Greek in 1855 by Lord Palmerston. His meagre salary was the subject of Endowment of the Greek Professorship and The New Method of Evaluation as Applied to pi".

Maybe sombody might like to add some Wikification or a note about thisApwoolrich 13:13, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
