| This is the book of Bereishit / Genesis / בראשית which is the first book of the Torah. The source for the Hebrew text is from http://www.ccel.org/a/anonymous/hebrewot/home.html and http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/tan/index.htm. English text is from the public domain JPS Bible at http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/jps/index.htm.
In the Jewish tradition, the Torah is divided into a series of parshahs (portions) which are each read in the synagogue on Shabbat in a cyclical fashion, beginning and ending on Simchat Torah. The need to cite individual lines caused the development of a chapter-verse layout which is presented in most printed copies. Here, the text is presented in both formats. |
