This subtemplate of {{NYT link}} is used to format the text following the link. When the parameters it takes are undefined or empty in the calling template errors are passed (generated by {{#expr:+}}) as sentinel values so that {{#iferror... functions here can handle them appropriately. (Perhaps there is some more elegant way to do this, but {{#ifeq... comparing the values to an empty string weren't working for some reason.)
