Achyuta Rao, P. S., L.M.S., Senior Surgeon and Sanitary Commissioner, Mysore (retired); b. Bangalore, 1857; educ: London Mission High School, and the Central College, Bangalore; proceeded to Bombay and joined the Grant Medical College; passed L.M.S., 1884; returned to Bangalore and was appointed as Assistant Surgeon and Lecturer, Medical School, Bangalore, the same year; transferred to Mysore as Assistant Surgeon in charge of the District of Hassan; Chief Assistant to Senior Surgeon and Sanitary Commissioner, Mysore, 1889; promoted to the grade of Civil Surgeon, and posted to Shimoga, 1891; in charge of Mysore Hospital and Jail, 1897; Civil Surgeon and Chief Plague Officer till 1906; Superintendent and Medical Officer, Bangalore Central Jail, 1906; Freemason and Member of the Craft Lodge, of which he was W.M. for Member of the District Grand Lodge as well as District Grand Chapter; is a linguist and knows seven languages; twice acted as Surgeon and Sanitary Commissioner and Ex-Officio Inspector-General of Prisons, Mysore, in which post he was made permanent.
