(1904); Lieutenant-Governor, Punjab (Retd.) b. 1856; 5th s. of late Richard Martin Dane, M.D., C.B.,Inspector-General of Hospitals, of Clarendon Lodge, Millbrook; m. 1882, Edith, 3rd d. of late Lieutenant-General Sir F. B. No-man, K.C.B.; Educ: Kingstown School, Ireland; entered Indian Civil Service in the Punjab, 1876; Private Secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor, 1879-82; on special duty for the revision of the land revenue settlement of the District of Gurdaspur, 1887-92, Dy. Commissioner and Settlement Officer 1892-96; Chief Secretary to the Punjab Government, 1896 1900; served as Resident Magistrate at Tralee, County Kerry, 1900-1; recalled to India as Resident in Kashmir, 1901; was in charge of the British mission to Kabul, 1904-5; concluded the treaty with Amir Habibullah Khan, 1905; Secretary to the Government of India in the Foreign Department, 1902-8; Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab, 1908 Retired.
