Stone, J. H., M.A., F.R.H.S., C.I.E.. Acting Director of Public Instruction, Madras: b. 1858; joined service as Principal, Teachers’ College, Saidapet, 1886; Principal of the Kumbakonani College, 1830; Principal, Rajahmundry College, 1898; Inspector of Schools, Western Circle, 1899; Inspector of European and Training Schools, 1903; Principal and Professor of English, Presidency College, Madras, 1907; acted twice as Director of Public Instruction, (1909-10); on special duty in connection with the revision of the Madras Code for some time; became temporary Deputy Director of Public Instruction, 1912; appointed as acting Director of P.I. Madras, 1913; confirmed, 1914. Address: Nungumbaukam, Madras.
