WHITE, Edward Douglass (1845—). An American jurist, associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. He was born in La Fourche Parish, La.; was educated at Mount Saint Mary's College (Emmitsburg, Md.), Georgetown College (Georgetown, D. C.), and the Jesuit College at New Orleans; and served in the Confederate Army during part of the Civil War. In 1868 he was admitted to the Louisiana bar, and soon attained considerable prominence in his profession. He was a member of the State Senate from 1874 to 1878, was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana from 1878 to 1801, was then a Democratic member of the United States Senate for three years, and in February, 1894, was appointed an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court.
