American School at Athens, The. The American School of Classical Literature, Art and Antiquities, in Athens, was founded in 1881 at the suggestion of Professor Charles Eliot Norton. It is supported partly by endowment and partly by contributions from American colleges and universities. It affords opportunities for advanced study of ancient Greek civilization, and carries on archæological investigations. It has made important excavations in Argos, Crete and other places. The results of the studies and excavations are reported in the American Journal of Archæology..
